Tibetan Stupa in Western Sichuan 四川


Western Sichuan Province in China has many adherents of Tibetan Buddhism and stupas and prayer flags are ubiquitous in the region.


The Tibetan stupa or chorten is usually whitewashed and consists of three parts: the stepped base, the middle cylinder and the steeple. Each part has a significance to Buddhists.

Erecting a stupa results in gained merit and is seen as an act of the utmost devotion. Visitors should circle a stupa in a clockwise direction.
