Airforce pilot Zhai Zhigang, 42, became the first Chinese astronaut (yuhangyuan) to walk in space as he emerged from his Shenzhou VII spacecraft and waved a Chinese flag on a 15 minute spacewalk broadcast live on national Chinese TV.
This is China's third manned space flight and a voyage of immense pride to the nation.
The first person to walk in space was Alexey Arkhipovich Leonov of the USSR in 1965.
The Shenzhou re-entry capsule will try to make a landing in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on completion of the mission.
